The Last Session

I was visiting a long time patron and great friend when the notion came up to do a painting based on Leonardo’s Last Supper, but using rockstar’s who have already made their way to the other side.

We thought it was a sensational idea and should be a lot of fun. This painting The Last Session is a result of that inspiration.

The first challenge was the selection of the 12 musicians. From a possible list of about 20 we finally agreed on these 11 men, plus Janis.

From the left to right: Otis Reading, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, Jerry Garcia, Frank Zappa, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison.

The criteria was simple. We felt they all needed to be important contributors in the Rock’n Roll field of music, as well as strong personalities easily identifiable and well known for what they did.

Through research and personal experience I tried to bring out what I know of them. As to the style, I wanted to follow closely Leonardo’s designs and gestures to maintain the integrity of the original as much as I could to approach it as a classical piece. To me it was quite important that the last session have all the qualities of an old masterpiece.

In my version Jesus is portrayed as the universal spirit, the Muse, if you will, inspiring the arts so if there is a message, in The Last Session it has to do with the way spirit moves through music as it does for all great artists, manifesting individually in the form of personality.
